What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Water you cannot switch off is the short version. If something is flooding, overflowing or smells of gas, it needs attention tonight. Faults that should not sit:

  • A burst pipe, or a braided hose split under a basin
  • A sewer pushing back up into showers or the yard
  • A storage tank pouring water from its base or relief line
  • Gas smells, where the network's emergency number comes first, then us
  • Stormwater getting into the house on the low land along the creek

A dripping tap or a slow basin can sit until business hours at the weekday rate. Describe the sounds and the water you can see, and the call sorts it into tonight or tomorrow.

Burst Pipe? Start at the Meter

Turn off the tap at the meter first. You will find it close to the front boundary, and a quarter turn cuts the supply. From there:

  1. 01

Run the taps to empty the pipes, so no pressure is sitting on the split.

  2. 02

Switch the power off at the main switch if water is near outlets or appliances.

  3. 03

Lift rugs, cords and boxes clear of the wet, then phone (02) 4093 0558.

Whether the burst is in a unit or a house, the first move is the same, and every minute the supply stays on costs more floor. We take over from there with the repair, and the drains and leak detection work covers whatever the water found on its way through.

The After-Hours Run, Step by Step

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Stop the flow, then repair

On an emergency call the water or gas gets shut off first, the damage gets checked, and the repair happens on the spot wherever the pipe allows.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Drives the Figure on an Emergency Call?

The hour carries the most weight. Late-night and weekend work costs more than a weekday job, and the booking call names that premium. After the clock:

  • Access, with a split inside a wall or beneath a timber floor taking longer to expose
  • Pipe type, as rusted galvanised steel in an older cottage is joined differently from PVC or copper
  • Parts, if the fix needs a valve or a length of pipe from the van's stock
  • What the water reached before we got there, which gets assessed before the plumbing side is quoted

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. The number quoted is the number you pay, so an emergency call never turns into an open-ended bill.

Storms, Old Units and the Creek Line

A Hunter downpour fills the low-lying ground along the creek and the foreshore first

In a heavy fall, yard grates can overflow and send water over driveways and toward floor wastes. A drain that misbehaves only in rain may be at capacity rather than choked, and a camera run tells the two apart before any digging, and the stormwater drains page covers the lasting fixes.

Tanks and hoses

Mid-century housing means plenty of ageing storage cylinders, and one can split with no drip beforehand. The braided hose feeding a renovated vanity can let go just as suddenly, and both flood a room quickly. Our hot water page covers repair against replacement, and a temporary tank keeps showers running while a new unit is organised.

One customer who rang us mid-flood:

Units, Cottages and the Main Road Strip

Mixed housing, mixed faults. Newer infill units sit along The Esplanade, while weatherboard and fibro cottages by the lake date back well before the 1970s and can still carry original galvanised supply pipe. Shops on Main Road are a strip of separate tenancies, with no enclosed centre in the suburb. Each building type fails in its own way, and every one of them gets the same after-hours pricing and warranty.

Which Emergency Do You Have?

Pick the fault closest to yours:

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water failure

Cold showers, a puddle under the cylinder, or water spitting from the relief valve.

Gas fitter at work on a kitchen oven

Gas faults

A gas smell indoors, a hissing fitting, or a bill that has jumped for no reason.

Plumber laying new pipe in an open trench

Blocked sewer

Gurgles from the floor wastes, a shower base filling on its own, or sewage in the yard.

Drain camera monitor showing the inside of a pipe

Water leaks

A damp patch, a bill with no explanation, or running water with every tap closed.

When We're Not the Right Call

Some faults belong to other hands. A break in the street main, or at the meter itself, is for Hunter Water to repair, and burnt wiring or a tripping switchboard needs an electrician. On the phone, you get their contact rather than a booking with us.

Emergency Plumbing Questions

My hot water unit died at midnight. Is that an emergency?

That depends on why it stopped. Water dripping from the tank or a relief valve that keeps discharging wants a plumber tonight, before a laundry floor is soaked, and plenty of Speers Point tanks are old enough to give out with no lead-up. A cold tank that is otherwise dry can sit until daylight, and one phone call tells us which you have.

Water is pouring through the ceiling. What do I do first?

Shut the main tap at the meter, and if the water is near light fittings or power points, switch off the mains power as well. Put buckets under the drip and keep people out of that room. Then ring (02) 4093 0558 and list what is already off, so the right parts come with the plumber.

Can a blocked sewer wait until morning?

Not if sewage is surfacing in the yard or backing up into a shower base. That is a health issue and it gets treated as urgent, though a toilet that still drains slowly with nothing coming back up can wait for the next slot. The blocked sewer page explains how the clear runs.

Who arranges the call-out in a rental property?

Ring us first if water is moving, then ring the agent. Stopping the damage matters more than the paperwork. Agents and landlords can settle the invoice afterwards, and the tenant process we run for strata and real estate keeps everyone informed with photos and a detailed invoice.
