What to Do When You Smell Gas
Treat a strong smell indoors as urgent and work through these steps in order:
- Get everyone out, pets included, and leave the doors open behind you.
- Touch nothing electrical, whether a switch or a power point, on or off.
- Turn off the meter valve or cylinder only if you pass it while leaving.
- Call the gas emergency number from outside, away from the smell.
The network makes the street supply safe; the pipework inside your boundary is where we come in. Other gas work, such as new connections, is on the gas fitting hub.
How Does a Gas Leak Show Itself?
Natural gas and LPG are odourless until the supplier adds a sulphur scent, which is why a leak smells like rotten eggs. Watch for these too:
- A faint hissing at a cylinder, a meter or a joint in the pipe.
- A burner flame that lifts, flickers yellow or goes out on its own.
- Feeling light-headed indoors and fine again out in the air.
- A gas account that jumps while your cooking and heating stay the same.
Any one of these justifies a detector sweep. A slow leak can hide behind a wall for weeks, and the detector reads it at levels a nose cannot match.
How the Detector Finds It
- 01
The detector sweep
Starting at the meter or cylinder, the fitter follows the pipe to every appliance with a sensor that picks up tiny traces.
- 02
The pressure test
The line is isolated and pressurised, and a gauge shows whether it holds.
- 03
The repair
The fault is exposed and fixed, whether that means a fitting tightened, a corroded stretch replaced or a perished hose swapped.
- 04
The retest
The line is pressurised again, the appliance is fired and checked, and you see the reading that says the system holds.
How Is a Gas Leak Repair Priced?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
Four things set the figure on a gas leak job:
- How deep the fault is buried, as a joint behind the stove is exposed far faster than pipe under concrete.
- What the pipework is made of, because older copper and steel each need their own fittings and time.
- The appliance itself, as a worn heater connection can mean the unit needs work, not just the line.
- Crawl space and wall access, since a subfloor with little clearance slows every step.

When We're Not the Right Call
Two things fall outside what we do here:
- Gas escaping at the meter or out in the street belongs to the network operator, who repairs its own pipes.
- A heater or oven that keeps tripping the power has a wiring problem, which an electrician tracks down.
Fitting a new appliance rather than fixing a leak? That is gas appliance installation.
Before You Ring About a Gas Smell
Who do I ring first when I can smell gas at home?
The gas network's emergency number comes first when the smell is strong, called from the footpath or the far end of the yard. Once they have made the supply safe, book us to find and repair the escape in your own pipework and appliances.
Do you take gas leak calls in Boolaroo and Warners Bay too?
Yes, along with Macquarie Hills and Teralba. A gas fitter comes out with a detector and a test gauge wherever the house is. Please make the call to (02) 4093 0558 once you are outside.
Can the leak be mended on the same visit?
Where it is a loose union, a cracked flare or a perished appliance hose, yes: the part is fixed and the line retested before we go. A rusted pipe under concrete or soil takes more, because it has to be uncovered, and you see that price before the digging.
Should an old gas heater be checked after the repair?
Yes. A tight pipe does not mean the heater is sound, and an old space heater can have tired valves and seals of its own. Checking the burner, the flame and the connection on that appliance tells you whether it is safe to keep running.
