Gas fitter checking an oven connection

What Does a Gas Appliance Install Involve?

The job has three parts, and each one is checked before the appliance gets used:

The connection itself

A new line, an extension of the existing one, or a bayonet point fitted to the manufacturer's specification.

The pressure and leak test

Every joint and hose is tested with a gas detector before the appliance is lit or switched on.

The sign-off

Compliance paperwork for the installation, which you keep with the appliance records for insurance and resale.

A bottle-fed heater and a natural-gas oven on the same street are different jobs, and the quote reflects which one your house has.

When Is It a Replacement, Not a Reconnect?

Age tells most of the story, and so does the flame:

  • Yellow or orange flames on a cooktop that should burn blue.
  • Soot marking around burners, heater panels or the flue outlet.
  • A heater that smells when it starts, or a pilot light that keeps going out.
  • An oven that takes longer to heat than it used to.

If the appliance fails the check, reconnecting it is not legal, so the job stops at the inspection and the finding goes to you in writing. A leak in the pipe itself is handled through gas leak detection.

How the Connection Is Made

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The connection and testing

The fitter extends the gas pipe if needed, sets the appliance in place, checks for escapes with soapy water and a detector, then adjusts the flame.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Moves the Figure on the Job

  • The run of new pipework, because a heater on a far wall costs more to reach than a cooktop beside the existing line.
  • The appliance itself, which you supply or we source, and the fittings each model needs.
  • The supply type, since a natural-gas connection and an LPG bottle set-up are different installs.
  • Any change to the meter or regulator the new appliance demands.

Where the Housing Shapes the Job

Old cottages and new units

Housing here ranges from weatherboard and fibro cottages by the lake, some older than 1970, to recent infill units on The Esplanade and on Main Road. A modern cooktop or heater can draw more gas than the old line was sized for, so an older house may need a new regulator or bigger pipe, while a unit brings strata approval into the job.

Brick-veneer in between

Post-war houses in brick-veneer sit between the two, and the age of the existing line is what decides whether a new appliance connects to it or needs a fresh run. Testing sorts that out before anything is quoted.

When We're Not the Right Call

If an oven's ignition, light or fan has lost power, the problem is electrical and an electrician fixes it. Gas escaping at the meter or from the street pipe is reported to the network's emergency line, ideally from outside the house.

Questions Before You Book

Do all gas appliances need a licensed fitter to install them?

Yes. Anything that connects to a gas line, from a cooktop to a pool heater, is licensed work in NSW. The fitter checks the line pressure, makes the connection, tests it for leaks and signs off the compliance paperwork.

Can you connect an outdoor BBQ in a Speers Point backyard?

Yes. A new pipe is laid from the gas supply to the patio or deck, sized for the barbecue's burners and finished with a bayonet point, then leak-tested. How far that spot sits from the meter mostly sets the price.

Do you install gas appliances in units along the lake?

We do, once the owners corporation has approved any work on gas pipe that crosses common property. The strata and real estate page explains how we handle the approvals and the tenant side of that process.

How long does a cooktop or oven installation take?

A straight swap in an existing cut-out with the line already in place is a short job. New pipework, a bottle-to-natural-gas conversion or a relocated appliance takes longer, and the fixed quote covers the whole job before work starts.
